Ice Climbing in Rjukan
When Rjukan gets shadow from September to March, the valley sides freeze into an ice climber's paradise. Over 150 frozen waterfalls make Rjukan one of the absolute best ice climbing areas in the world.
Why Rjukan?
The unique geography — a deep valley, little sun in winter, many waterfalls from the mountainsides — means the waterfalls freeze early and stay frozen for a long time. The season typically stretches from December to March.
The area has routes for all levels: everything from short beginner routes to long, demanding multi-pitch routes for experienced climbers. There is also a friendly ice climber culture in the town.
