Getting to Rjukan

Rjukan is centrally located in Southern Norway, but in a deep valley — and there are several ways to get there. Here is the complete guide.

From Oslo (~175 km, 2.5–3 hours)

The easiest route: E134 west via Drammen and Kongsberg, then fv37 north from Notodden via the Tinnsjø waterway to Rjukan. The road is open all year round.

Public transit: Train from Oslo S to Notodden (approx. 2 hours), then bus to Rjukan. Check vy.no and entur.no.

From Bergen (~360 km, 5–6 hours)

E134 east via Haukelifjell. Spectacular mountain pass — watch out for winter closures.

From Göteborg (~440 km, 5.5–6.5 hours)

E6 to Oslo, then E134 west. Mostly good roads all the way.

From Stockholm (~625 km, 8 hours)

Via Karlstad and across the border at Magnor — or via E18 to Oslo and further on E134.
