Krossobanen
Built by Norsk Hydro in 1928 so that the workers could reach the sun — Krossobanen is Northern Europe's first cable car and one of Rjukan’s most iconic attractions.

Built for people to get sun
Rjukan is located so deep in the Vestfjorddalen valley that the town does not have direct sunlight from September to March. In the 1920s, Norsk Hydro decided to do something about it — in 1928, Krossobanen opened, a cable car that takes you up to Gvepseborg at 886 m.o.h., where there is sunlight all year round.
It was the first cable car of this type in Northern Europe and is still in operation today. The ride up takes approx. 5 minutes and offers a spectacular view of the entire Rjukan.
At the top — Gvepseborg
From Gvepseborg, you have a panoramic view of Rjukan, Vemork and the entire Vestfjorddalen valley. Several mountain hikes also start here — including to Hardangervidda and to Helberghytta, a cabin with strong ties to the resistance struggle.
There is a café at the top and several good viewpoints for photography.
